Here’s everything you need to know to find the right metal for your engagement ring:

yellow gold

Yellow Gold

Perfect for those who love a traditional look, yellow gold is a timeless choice for engagement ring settings. Additionally, yellow gold is less likely to cause skin irritation, making it an excellent option for those with sensitive skin.

Maintenance Requirements

Yellow gold is relatively low maintenance, however, will require regular polishing to help maintain its luster over time. We always recommend avoiding harsh chemicals that can dull the ring’s metal.
white gold

White Gold

White gold offers a sleek and modern alternative to yellow gold, with its bright appearance. It's often alloyed with metals like nickel or palladium to achieve its color and help strengthen the metal. Keep in mind, this can cause skin sensitivities to those with nickel allergies.

Maintenance Requirements

White gold requires more maintenance than yellow gold due to its rhodium plating. It’s important to note that the rhodium plating will wear down over time and need to be re-plated to maintain its white colour. To preserve its appearance, we recommend keeping your ring away from harsh chemicals.
rose gold

Rose Gold

Romance lover? Rose gold rings offer a unique aesthetic to any engagement ring type. The soft pink hue is created by adding copper to gold, which increases the ring’s durability. Although rose gold tends to be hypoallergenic, those with copper sensitivities might consider a metal alternative.

Maintenance Requirements

Rose gold is a relatively low maintenance metal type. As with other gold colours, regular cleaning and polishing are recommended to keep your ring looking its best.
white gold

Platinum

Platinum is the most durable of all metals used in engagement ring settings. It's naturally white and hypoallergenic, making it a perfect choice for those with sensitive skin. Platinum is less prone to scratching, and wearing down than gold, however it is also a more expensive option.

Maintenance Requirements

Platinum requires very little maintenance versus white gold. Although 14k and 18k are suitable for everyday wear, it is a malleable metal (that will bend over time) and require more upkeep compared to platinum. Because of this platinum may be less expensive to maintain over time than traditional gold.

14k vs 18k Gold

The main difference between 14k and 18k is the amount (ratio) of pure gold that’s mixed in with the other metals. Gold itself is not a hard metal, so the lowest grade, 14k for example, will actually produce a harder ring setting. In the case of coloured gold (yellow and rose), going higher in amount of gold, such as 18k, will produce a slightly more pigmented ring (in yellow hues).

Consider your preferences when determining the best gold for you!
